Maintenance Supervisor

Position Summary: 

The Supervisor is responsible for ensuring safe, efficient, productive, and effective performance of a team of employees. The primary function is a supervisory role with staff engaged in multiple work areas consisting of mechanical and/or electrical related work. Under direction from the Wastewater Utility Superintendent the incumbent performs tasks of more than average difficulty requiring the exercise of considerable initiative and independent judgment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Maintain reliability and availability of plant equipment using a computerized asset management system and data analytics.
  • Responsible for work execution; trains assigned staff, assigns and reviews repairs, installations and maintenance tasks and work, evaluates work performance and initiates appropriate personnel actions.
  • Instructs, supervises and monitors quality of work assigned.
  • Inspects areas of responsibility on a regular basis to locate problems or deterioration.
  • Responsible for maintaining records of maintenance activities, personnel performance, business documents and other forms. 
  • Reads and interprets drawings, specifications and policies.
  • Applies and demonstrates ability to plan, organize and execute assignments effectively and efficiently including time management, effective utilization of resources and productivity reporting, and meeting deadlines.
  • Diagnoses equipment malfunctions in absence of or in conjunction with other technicians, identifies appropriate resolution and directs corrective actions.
  • Works with Planner/Schedulers to efficiently plan and schedule all mechanical and electrical preventive and repair work to keep all assets functional and plant compliant.
  • Demonstrates effective team leadership and supervision through integrity and ethics, drive and mutual appreciation and respect.
  • Trains and ensures use of safety equipment and follows established safety procedures for all work.
  • Coordinates job shutdowns with approved Shutdown Request Forms and Action Plans and/or start-ups with Operational Staff for major repairs.
  • Researches capabilities of existing systems and offers recommendations for changes.
  • Works in collaboration with treatment engineer and Engineering Department as needed to update the annual IR&R work plan and budget.
  • Meets requirements of asset program’s predictive and preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Establishes team goals, applies “continuous improvement” philosophy, and monitors metrics to determine performance achievement.
  • Follows all Sustainable Practices while making purchases or decisions on Process design recommendations.
  • Communicates critical and routine information effectively and in a timely manner with Operations, external workgroups and senior management. 
  • Coordinates with Construction Programs Coordinator with any required construction activities and ongoing maintenance needs.
  • Actively promotes safe behaviors and health awareness at all times in the execution of daily tasks.
  • Performs other duties as required.

  • Bachelor’s degree in water or wastewater treatment, biology, chemistry or related area is preferred.  A balance of education and experience will be considered.
  • Five (5) years of experience operating advanced wastewater treatment facility. 
  • Five (5) years supervisory experience.  
  • Knowledge of business and management principles involved in planning, resource allocation, leadership techniques, production methods, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of federal and state regulations such as DEQ (Department of Environment Quality), EPA, OSHA standards, and the Virginia Health Department.
  • Knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, costs, and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture and distribution of clean water and exceptional quality bio solids.
  • Ability to monitor/assess performance of self, other individuals, or work groups to make improvements or take corrective action.
  • Ability to manage one’s own time and the time of others.
  • Ability to conduct tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
  • Ability to use personal computer and general office equipment (e.g., multi-line telephone, fax, copier, printer).
  • Ability to use computer desktop software programs (e.g., Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Microsoft Project, Intranet, Internet, Avantis-CMMS).
Language Skills: 

Ability to communicate effectively and resolve conflicts both orally and in writing with both internal and external customers.  Excellent verbal, telephone and written communication skills.

While performing the duties of the job, typical of office work, and include lifting up to 20 pounds, and minimal pushing or pulling. When necessary, employee may perform duties of subordinate staff.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Environmental conditions necessitate following strict safety guidelines and use of Personal Protective Equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee performs work primarily indoors in a climate controlled environment, with outdoor trips between buildings and some outdoor work required. Some areas of plant are hot and humid at times.
