Free event is part of the national awareness day to promote the value of water
If there was no water, how would that impact your morning routine? No shower, no toilet and no coffee! AlexRenew and Virginia American Water want to help remind Alexandria residents and area commuters just how important water is with an “Imagine a Day Without Water” pop-up event on Thursday, October 12. The value of water event will take place at the Carlyle entrance to the King Street Metro Station Tunnel from 7-9 a.m.
Morning commuters are invited to stop by to enjoy free coffee provided by Sugar Shack Donuts and learn about the impact clean, reliable water has on their daily lives. AlexRenew will illustrate the 100 gallons the average person uses each day by displaying two full-size rain barrels at the event, and Virginia American Water will provide free giveaways and education.
The Alexandria pop-up event is part of the third annual Imagine a Day Without Water, a nationwide day of education and advocacy about the value of water.
“Clean water and the infrastructure to support it is often out of sight, but it is critical to the health, safety and prosperity of our community. Clean water boosts property values, tourism and business growth,” said Karen Pallansch, CEO of AlexRenew. “Imagine a Day Without Water is an opportunity to take a moment to consider how much we all need clean water, and the importance of investing in our nation’s water system.”
Leading up to the event, AlexRenew also shared online videos featuring Alexandria businesses, including Port City Brewing Company and Sugar Shack Donuts, to discuss the importance of water to their businesses. According to a Value of Water study, the national GDP would lose $22.5 billion from just one day of water service disruption.
“Access to clean, reliable water is life-sustaining, and we take our work in providing water service to Alexandria’s residents and businesses very seriously,” said Barry Suits, Virginia American Water president. “Our company proactively works every day to replace the aging water infrastructure in the City of Alexandria, which helps to ensure that customers never have to be without water.”
Led by the Value of Water Campaign, hundreds of organizations across the country will host events on October 12 aimed to raise awareness about the crucial need for investment in our nation’s water infrastructure to ensure that no American community is left without safe and reliable water.
