Alexandria’s Combined Sewer System Remediation Plan Gets a New Name

August 15, 2018

The new name highlights the commitment to improving Alexandria’s waterways

ALEXANDRIA, Va., August 15, 2018 – Alexandria Renew Enterprises (AlexRenew) has introduced “RiverRenew” as the name for the proposed solution to remediate the City’s combined sewer outfalls. Formerly Alexandria’s Wet Weather Program, RiverRenew is a major initiative that will prevent millions of gallons of sewage mixed with rainwater from reaching Alexandria’s waterways. Approved by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality in late June, the program is planning a series of community outreach and engagement events in the coming months.

The approved plan, also known as Option B+, includes the construction of a deep tunnel system, new sewer infrastructure and improvements to AlexRenew’s Water Resource Recovery Facility. The proposed tunnels will connect to the existing outfalls to capture and transport a mixture of sewage and rainwater to AlexRenew for transformation into clean water.

“The unveiling of RiverRenew marks an exciting time for us,” said Karen Pallansch, CEO of AlexRenew. “This seven-year program is an important investment in our waterways that will improve water quality for decades to come. It is essential we hear from our neighbors in Alexandria and let them know that questions and feedback are always welcome. We want to ensure the community fully understands the impact and outcomes of RiverRenew.”

RiverRenew is conducting extensive outreach to ensure Alexandrians and regulatory stakeholders are informed and heard from as the program progresses. Up first are Community Listening Sessions in September. These sessions are intended to bring the community up to speed on the proposed tunnel routes and facility locations, solicit feedback, and optimize the design of the system to minimize impacts while achieving the program’s objectives. These listening sessions will take place from September 17–25, 2018. More information can be found online at

RiverRenew’s redesigned website also offers community members opportunities to learn how Alexandria’s water system works, subscribe to program updates via email, submit questions to the RiverRenew team, and even share their best ideas to help name the tunnels.
