It’s a fact: the cost of treating water is going to increase in the coming years. One reason is more stringent environmental regulations that call for cleaner wastewater that will help restore the health of the Chesapeake Bay. This requires ASA – and other wastewater treatment agencies in the region – to upgrade our facility so that we can continue to operate.

How does the Alexandria Sanitation Authority charge me for wastewater treatment?
Alexandria Sanitation Authority is a business partner with Virginia American Water. As such, the Sewer Rates for treatment of wastewater appear as one of the charges on your water bill and are collected by Virginia American Water.

How much is the wastewater treatment rate?
The charge is $6.36 per each 1,000 gallons of water used, plus an account service charge per bill of $5.27. The ASA Board of Directors approved a new fixed “Bay Protection Charge” to recover capital expenses needed to upgrade ASA infrastructure.

These upgrades are required in order to meet new regulations focused on protecting the health of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. For a detailed breakdown of those fees, please see the brochure above.
